Abstract

Poverty is not an enduring state in which individuals constantly reside; instead, individuals can experience periods of poverty and move in and out of it throughout their lives. Considering the limited information available on strategies for individuals to escape poverty in our country, this study focuses on the city of Mashhad, a rapidly growing metropolis with a significant and expanding population in its outskirts. Theoretical frameworks and approaches, such as the cycle of needs and resources, the theory of empowerment, and the capability approach to poverty, have been examined in this research. The study adopts a qualitative methodology, employing interview-based data collection techniques. The sampling method employed is theoretical sampling, and the interviewees consist of individuals (both women and men) aged 18 and above, residing in marginalized areas of Mashhad. Thematic analysis and the framework proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006) have been utilized for data analysis. The findings of this study reveal that the poverty alleviation strategies employed by low-income individuals include accessing sustainable and effective formal and informal support systems (including efficient and sustainable informal support and maximum formal support), pursuing stable and skill-oriented employment opportunities (such as sustainable employment and low-capital skill-focused jobs), engaging in education-oriented and progressive apprenticeships (such as education that promotes advancement and advanced skill training), effectively managing high-cost assets (such as making slight reductions in children's education expenses, family's basic food budget, clothing expenses, health, and hygiene costs), and accumulating assets efficiently (such as maintaining consistent monetary savings and savings in movable assets). Furthermore, the overarching theme chosen for this research is "Multi-dimensional and flexible strategies for escaping poverty."
