Abstract

In the last two decades, sovereign wealth funds had been one of the most important actors in global political economy. Although these funds are considered an economic tool, but states have been abale to benefit from political results of their activities as well. This article aims to introduce SWFs, their important political economy functions for the owner countries and their effect in the global system, and introduces their economic and political roles in the global dimension. The question is What is the reason for the importance of SWFs in the global political economy in the last two decades? Using the theoretical framework of interdependence and relying on the descriptive-analytical method and using economic data and statistics related to these funds, this article believes that the mixing of economic and political activities, the use of SWFs by states and the expansion of their economic activities in other states have linked the political-economic interests of states together and created interdependence at the global level. The important and fundamental role of SWFs in shaping this global interdependence has made them an important and effective actor in the field of global political economy. The findings of this research show that these funds, by playing economic roles such as stabilizing the global financial system, providing international financing and participating in high-risk investments, as well as political ones such as influencing the balance of global power, balancing regional and global threats, contributing to stability and Internal balance and performance as a tool of foreign policy have become an important activity in the contemporary global political economy system.
